South African women have long lived in oppression, but they have never stopped fighting for freedom and equality. From the past until now, women have experienced domestic violence, sexual harassment in the workplace, unequal pay, girls are not allowed to go to school, and no-help parents.

For this reason, Women's National Day was born, which has been a holiday since 1995. The day also commemorates the famous 1956 march of 20,000 women at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The women marched against a law requiring people designated as "black" by the South African government to apply for a travel permit only to travel within the country. The purpose of the regulation is to maintain segregation and control migrant workers.

In response to the regulations, women of all ethnic groups were angry not only about these travel restrictions but apartheid in general. They eventually petitioned the government to change policy by standing still for half an hour outside the capital complex, and singing a song that included the words, "You strike a woman, you strike a rock!"

The movement was led by: Lilian Ngoyi, Sophia Williams, Rahima Moosa, and Helen Joseph. They boldly risked real change, and their efforts finally paid off.
