The clinic is the first in Cyprus to offer dedicated specialist childcare services. It provides a platform for radical changes in the care of children with intellectual disabilities and for establishing prenatal testing. It's named after the doctor who spearheaded the project and is credited with changing the lives of thousands of people on the island. A new licensing law is needed, as there is no prior precedent.
The opening of this clinic was initiated for the first time by Dr. Amerikos Argyriou, one of the most famous doctors in Cyprus and is also quite well-known abroad. From his youth until he was 81 years old, he continued to train to give hope and dignity to thousands of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Before the existence of the clinic, some sufferers were treated inhumanely and were often neglected and even chained to their beds. This led Argyriou to seek a dignified solution by forming the Theotokos Foundation to help remove the stigma associated with this disability and guide them toward social integration.
