A Lombard loan, also known as a Lombard Credit, is a type of loan that is secured by an asset called collateral. Collateral acts as protection for creditors. If borrowers fail to repay their loans, banks can sell assets to get their money back. This is similar to how you use your home as collateral for your mortgage.

Lombard loans allow clients to expand their portfolio of securities or take advantage of opportunities in the market without having to inject new liquidity or sell assets in the portfolio.

Swissquote Lombard loans are available in CHF/EUR/USD and many other ed currencies. Clients just need to apply and log in to an online account from wherever they are. A minimum of three diversified assets in the portfolio is required to enjoy this feature.

Swissquote will typically lend up to, depending on the quality:

  • 70% for stocks
  • 90% for bonds
  • On-demand for investment funds and other liquid assets

The main risk of Lombard loans lies in the potential decline in the value of the assets used as collateral. To offset the decrease in the value of the collateral, the client is able to reduce the loan by the relevant amount, such as selling a portion of the asset.
