What are the best Australian brokers for crypto trading? What other features do they have to assist traders in the market?
Throughout the years, cryptocurrency trading has gained more fans and doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon. It's no surprise considering the potential from the price fluctuations. Not to mention the crypto market is open 24 hours, which means you can trade anytime you want. There are several places where you can trade crypto, from an exchange to a broker. Both are great platforms, but some might argue that using a broker is better since you can gain benefits from using leverage. For Australian traders, there are several great brokers for crypto trading to assist you.
Why You Should Consider Crypto Trading
Cryptocurrency is a digital currency that is secured in cryptography in order to make it nearly impossible to double-spend. Most of them are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology. One defining feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are generally not issued by any central authority, thus they are not affected by government interference or manipulations. Right now there are a lot of cryptocurrencies you can trade, but Bitcoin and Ethereum remain the most popular in the market.
Here are the top 2 traits that define crypto trading:
Cryptocurrency is relatively new, but it exhibits extreme volatility due to huge amount of speculative interest. For example, Bitcoin managed to rise as high as $19,378 and fell to lows of $5,851 between October 2017 and October 2018. But, the volatility in this market is what makes a lot of traders excited to jump in. In fact, the rapid intraday price movements can be a great opportunity for traders to speculate on.
2. Market Hours
Since there is no centralized governance of the crypto markets, it opens for 24 hours and 7 days a week. This provides more opportunities for a trader who works full time or is generally busy. Cryptocurrency transactions take place directly between individuals on exchanges all over the world. You can come home and open your devices to start trading right away. No need to wait until the market opening hours. However, there might be some periods of downtime when the market is adjusting to infrastructural updates.
Brokers vs Exchanges
Should you trade crypto in exchanges? What about brokers who offer crypto trading? While both have advantages and disadvantages, some might argue that trading with a broker is more suitable when it involves a huge amount of money. Exchange is great for crypto HODLers who want to do some long-term or mid-term investment, but a broker is great for speculative traders who like to use different trading tools such as margin, leverage, and many more.
Another consideration is the deposit and withdrawal methods. Crypto exchange usually has two funding options, by fiat currency or using debit and credit cards. While that seems to suffice, it does not give more choices to clients. Meanwhile, a broker has more funding options, ranging from bank transfers, various types of e-wallets including PayPal, and cryptocurrencies as well. Also, withdrawing from a broker is not as costly as the fees in exchanges. It usually varies between 0%-3%, while exchanges withdrawal fees can be as high as 6%.
Now, if you have decided to trade cryptocurrency with a broker, these are some of the best Australian-regulated brokers for crypto trading with great features to assist you in the digital market.
1. IC Markets
IC Markets is an Australian broker for crypto trading as it allows you to trade crypto 7 days a week using their trusted platforms, MT4 and MT5. You can get leverage up to 1:5 for crypto trading. They also provide different types of payment methods which include PayPal.
Since the crypto market is available 24/7, IC Markets makes sure you can trade crypto anywhere you want. That's why they provide trading platforms that are suitable for trading on the go. The technology also supports advanced charts and analysis to assist you in the digital market.
IC Markets is an online forex broker operating under the company of International Capital Markets Pty Ltd. Traders under the Australian jurisdiction are provided with the trading service of IC Markets AU that is headquartered in Australia and licensed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
On the other hand, non-Australian traders who open an account in this broker are registered under IC Markets SEY that is based in Seychelles, and regulated under the Seychelles Financial Services Authority (SFSA). The dual operation is a result of the relatively new rules from ASIC that prohibit their regulated broker to offer trading services outside Australia.
Classified as an ECN broker, IC Markets provide clients with MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader as platform trading options. This broker also follows market trends to include Cryptocurrencies as one of its products, enriching its already wide selection of trading assets that include Currencies, Indices, Metals, Energies, Softs, Stocks, as well as Bonds.
The minimum deposit in IC Markets is in the middle range compared to other ASIC-regulated brokers, as it reaches $200 for every client. Market analysis materials are also prepared regularly for trading insights on IC Markets's official website, proving their competence to serve their traders with important contents created by market experts that work specifically for them.
For payment methods, IC Markets allows funding and withdrawal via wire transfer, credit card, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, FasaPay, UnionPay, as well as Bitcoin via BitPay. The more interesting aspect from this broker is its multi-base currencies that include USD, AUD, EUR, GBP, SGD, NZD, JPY, CHF, HKD, and CAD.
As the trading technology in IC Markets is highly equipped with co-located servers and extremely low latency (especially on cTrader), the broker is widely known for its capability in hosting traders with the special needs for high-frequency trading as well as scalping.
To sum up, IC Markets is a fitting destination for active traders looking for a well-regulated broker. IC Markets is also flexible in terms of base currency and payment methods, signaling their commitment to welcome traders beyond their home country. I've read somewhere that peak trading hours are typically 8 a.m. to 4 p.m despite the market being open 24 hours. I haven't tried it tho.

A little tip, make sure the broker has your desired cryptocurrency. This is important, especially if you trade with less 'mainstream' coins.
