Hi guys, I am interested to trade on commodities, especially XAU/USD Pairs. But there is something that makes me wonder, it is about the swap fee. Is it the same between forex' swap fee and gold's?

Hi Pierre-Marie Gilson,
Swap fees for each currency pair at each broker may be different. However, you can find out how much swap is in each currency pair by looking at the detailed contract specifications. If you see a positive swap value for a currency pair, then you will get additional profit from the positive swap that has been set. However, if you see a negative swap rate, it means you have to pay for the negative swap that has been set. Here's how to find out the swap value for a currency pair:

Choose the currency pair which you want to view in your Metatrader Market Watch window. In this case, we will see the pair XAUUSD' swap fee.

Right-click on the pair, then select "Specification"

After that, the Contract Specification window will appear. Swap fees charged will be stated in the "Swap long" (swap for BUY positions) and "Swap short" (swap for SELL positions). The nominal stated in that section is the swap fee per 1.00 lots.

How to calculate swap? For example, I sell XAUUSD from table 1.01 dollars for 1 lot, if I let the position opens up to 4 days, will the cost be at 4.04 dollars?

On the contrary, if I Buy XAUUSD from the table it says -10.01 dollars for 1 lot. if I leave the open position until 4 days, it will be -40.04 dollars? Does this mean that when I sell, I get 4.04 dollars in profit, when I buy, I lose -40.04 dollars?

That's my confusion. I am a day trader who never holds a transaction for more than 4 hours, if I hold the transaction overnight, is my calculation right? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you

@Lorenzo Alcázar

Yes, that's right, if deposited after the broker closing hours. In addition, most brokers apply a 3-day swap on Wednesday. It means that the interest on Wednesday-Thursday is calculated 3 times because Saturdays and Sundays have no more interest, so the total in a week is 7 times the interest.

I've done an experiment about this. I leave my order overnight. I opened on XAUUSD, using 1 lot and I got a swap about 1.01. I should have been profit after the close. But the question is, why is there a swap fee?

I read that the swap properties are long -10.01 while the short swap was 1.01, which means when I buy, I will be charged an overnight fee of -10.01 per day. But, when I sell I will get added a profit of 1.01. Is the buy and sell position make the swap fee remain minus, so what are the positive and negative meanings for? Thank you

@Tony Edgar

Just look at the pair specifications. A positive swap (plus) means that you will earn interest. If it is negative (minus) it means that you will be charged interest. That's it

The question is about why!! For currencies it makes sense as there are banks and interest rate. However, for gold it is the matter of the question for which I'm after the response too.
